In GTK versions of PuTTY, pressing Alt with any of the keys on the small keypad above the arrow keys (Ins/Del, PgUp/PgDn, Home/End) could accidentally have the same effect as pressing the same key without Alt, instead of sending a different sequence so that the server could tell the difference.
